2nd District candidates sound off on gun violence

With students at schools across the country planning to walk out of class Wednesday, March 14 to protest gun violence, we examined recent stances from Congressional candidates in Michigan's 2nd District on that topic.

Candidates hoping represent Michigan's second district in Congress are thinking of ways to end gun violence.

Incumbent Bill Huizenga of Zeeland recently posted a photo to his Facebook page. It shows him talking with police and educators from Kenowa Hills Schools and the Kent Intermediate School District about a vote this week in Washington on the "STOP School Violence Act."

He also recently posted about bump stocks on semi-automatic guns, saying "I have expressed my concern and opposition to these types of modifications to semi-automatic firearms since the shooting in Las Vegas brought "bump stocks" to the attention of Congress and the American people."

Emergency room Dr. Rob Davidson of Spring Lake laid out a six-point plan Monday, March 12 to address gun violence this week. It includes banning weapons like the AR 15, along with high capacity magazines.

Davidson also called for more background checks and better mental health care. He was joined by a Reeths Puffer High School senior who called for Huizenga to take action on gun violence.

Nick Schiller of Wyoming will be facing Davidson for the Democratic nomination. His views on gun violence are not listed on his website. We've reached out to him about his stance and we'll update this story when we hear back.
