Allegan students call out lawmakers during walkout

Students in Allegan County joined the nationwide movement.

On Wednesday students in Allegan used the national walkout as an opportunity to call on their lawmakers. Roughly 100 students walked out of Allegan High School as they demanded change and an increase in safety in schools.

"We want students to be able to come to school in a safe environment not worrying about whose going to hurt them or their friends," one Allegan student said.

A message that resonated with Allegan Police Chief Rick Hoyer.

"I think you guys have got it right when you come out and say enough is enough," he told the crowd of students on Wednesday.

A concern that prompted students to act. The student organizers held up posters with lawmakers contact information. The students encouraged others to call and demand change.

"We're out here right now to tell you, we want you to make a change. We want legislation to help keep us safe in schools," one student told a politician's office.

Those lawmakers responded:

Congressman Fred Upton said in part, "We hear these students loud and clear... Our kids must be safe from violence at school."

State Senator Tonya Schuitmaker said in part, "I am greatly disappointed in the adults who are encouraging these demonstrations which are nothing more than a statement which solves nothing."

State Representative Mary Whiteford added, "We need to make sure our locals have the resources they need to protect our children."

Students tell WZZM 13 although there are other national walkouts scheduled they don't plan on participating in them. Instead they'll use that time to figure out other ways to create the change they want to see.
