Local effort seeks to protect kids from lead dangers

It's a danger lurking in thousands of Michigan homes and it poses the biggest threat to children: lead.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - It's a danger lurking in thousands of Michigan homes and it poses the biggest threat to children. That danger is lead.

Right now, there is a local push to prevent lead poisoning by providing educating and providing support to Kent County families and homeowners.

The City of Grand Rapids and the Healthy Homes Coalition of West Michigan have teamed up with the Kent County Health Department and the Rental Property Owners Association for the "Get The Lead Out" initiative.

The program is offering free lead remediation assistance for eligible homeowners. Repairs typically

include new windows and siding.

Lead poisoning is a proven problem in West Michigan, especially the 49507 area of Grand Rapids. Homes built before 1978 are likely to have lead in the paint inside and outside their homes. It is estimated that 80 percent of the housing stock in Grand Rapids meets that criteria.

Lead can cause a host of problems for those exposed, especially children, babies and pregnant women. It causes brain damage and learning disabilities.

For more information visit the Get The Lead Out website or contact the Healthy Homes Coalition of West Michigan at 616-241-3300.

Renters, homeowners and landlords can also contact the city of Grand Rapids Community Development Department at 616-456- 3030. The HUD funding, and the timeframe to participate, is limited.
