Desiree Linden, the Michigan resident known as one of the world's elite distance runners, has won the women's division of the Boston Marathon.
Now living in Washington Twp., the two-time Olympian claims her first major marathon win after finishing second in the 2010 Chicago Marathon and the 2011 Boston Marathon.
Linden ran an unofficial time of 2 hours, 39 minutes and 54 seconds. She's the first American woman to win the race in 33 years. Lisa Larsen Weidenback won it in 1985.
Now known as Lisa Larsen Rainsberger, the 1985 winner is a Battle Creek native and former runner at Michigan.
The conditions in Boston for the race were similar to metro Detroit's weather on Sunday, with plenty of rain and a temperature of 42 degrees when Linden crossed the finish line.
Edna Kiplagat of Kenya won last year's race with a time of 2:21:52.
Linden reportedly had time to slow down during today's race as fellow American Shalane Flanagan had to pull off the course for an apparent bathroom break.
She finished fourth in last year's Boston Marathon. Linden also placed in the 2016 Summer Olympics.
