Two members of Muskegon school board call special meeting

The special meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Hackley Administration Building on West Webster Ave.

MUSKEGON, MI - The Muskegon Public Schools Board of Education called a rare Monday meeting to discuss the possible closing of district buildings, on April 16.

The special meeting is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at the Hackley Administration Building on West Webster Ave.

13 On Your Side reached three school board members who say they will not be rushed into a vote that would result in the closing of at least two school buildings, which is why the meeting was scheduled ahead of Tuesday's regularly scheduled meeting.

"I'm going to be there," said Billie J. Bruce, Muskegon School Board Member. "Some parents might show up and I think they deserve some answers from us."

Bruce has big concerns about the district's proposed 2018-2019 budget. The district is considering four different options to close a projected budget deficit. Each of the options would result in school closings.

"I know we are going to have to close one or two," said Bruce.

One option includes closing Muskegon Middle School and moving those students to Lakeside Elementary. Bruce says she's had less than one week to review the four options before the proposed Tuesday vote.

The board will meet for its regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 17.
