Grand Rapids 8th grader called 'hero' after saving choking classmate

Arturo was given an award by the American Heart Association for his quick thinking.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A West Michigan teenager is being called a hero for his quick actions. Arturo Fierros is an eighth grader at Godfrey Lee Middle School and earlier this month he was with a fellow student who started choking and could not breathe.

"He started getting really red and couldn't cough or do anything," says Fierros.

In February, Arturo went through CPR and Heimlich training and at that moment he sprang into action performing the Heimlich and saving the student's life.

"The fact that Arturo felt that he had the confidence to do it and that it was done so seamlessly and effortlessly, no one knew it was happening, just speaks volumes to the type of person that he is," says Michael Donovan a teacher at the school.

Arturo was given an award by the American Heart Association for his quick thinking.
