Holland studying downtown traffic changes

The committee says the budget will determine when they can implement any changes.

HOLLAND, Mich. - Whether they are in cars, semis, busses or riding bicycles, Holland city leaders are looking for ways to move people around town more efficiently.

For the first time in more than 20 years, the city is doing a comprehensive traffic study that could lead to changes.

The Holland Traffic Study Committee has listened to citizens at a public meeting, heard input from a consultant and come up with six possible alternatives. Most involve converting sections of streets that circle or bisect the city from one-way traffic to two-way.

“We are looking at the future,” says Holland Director of Transportation Services Brian White. “We haven’t done it for about 20 years so we felt with the development in front of us and ongoing, now is a good time to stop and look at the traffic and how to best manage that.”

After one more public meeting for input, the Traffic Study Committee expects to send their report and recommendations to city council this fall. The committee says the budget will determine when they can implement any changes.
