White Lake area home unliveable after early morning fire

An early morning fire has badly damaged a home in Muskegon County's Whitehall Township.

WHITEHALL TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The Red Cross has been called to assist two adults who escaped an early morning house fire in Muskegon County.

The first call came around 4 a.m. on Friday, May 25 on Benston Road near Durham Road. That's just southwest of the Whitehall city limits.

While on the scene, our crews observed that the entire garage and part of the home were destroyed in the fire. There were giant holes burned through the roof of the home.

White Lake Area Fire Authority Captain Pete McCarthy said when crews arrived, the garage was completely engulfed in flames and there was some concern that the house to the west of this location might also catch on fire. At that point, the fire had already broken into the attic of the home.

Two senior citizens, a woman and her son, were checked out by medical personnel but appear unharmed. Investigators say fortunately they were across the home from where the fire started, far enough away to escape.

Crews were on the scene for hours doing overhaul. They say there was fire trapped into the chimney and they had to saw into the roof to verify the fire was out.

At this time there are still two pets missing.

It's not yet clear what caused the fire.
