Police: Lansing man drowns at Ionia County campground

Police say the man's drowning is likely due to a medical condition.

IONIA, Mich. - Crews are reporting that someone drowned in Ionia County Wednesday, June 13.

According to a release from the Ionia County Sheriff's Office, around 10:30 a.m., crews were dispatched to the Lakeside Resort and Campground on reports of a man who drowned ib the campground lake.

The man, 47-year-old Pedro Lira from Lansing, was found in the water and not breathing. Bystanders pulled him from the water and started giving him CPR until emergency responders could get there.

The sheriff's office says Lira was at the privately owned campground to fish with a friend when he fell into the lake. A group of young children a few docks down from where Lira was fishing saw him in distress and ran to the campground office to alert others.

Investigators reveal there may have been a pre-existing medical condition that caused Lira to fall into the water. The incident remains under investigation by the Ionia County Sheriff's Office and the county's medical examiner.
