BELMONT, Mich. - Thousands of golf fans will be in the hot sun and humidity at the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give this weekend.
But the tournament at the Blythefield Country Club near Grand Rapids is prepared to help people deal with the heat.
The golfers said they were excited about the heat and would prefer the warm weather over the rain. But they know how to beat it.
“These are people that work in these conditions not infrequently, and so they're attacking it with the right perspective," said Ken Fawcett, vice president of Spectrum Health Healthier Communities, and tournament physician. "I worry more about the casual observers that are just going to come out.”
The hot and humid weather can lead to heat exhaustion.
“If you feel like your heart is racing, if you feel as though you’re really hot and you’re not sweating, if you feel really parched, those are warning signs you should probably get inside, cool off, put a wet towel around your neck,” Fawcett said.
But the tournament is prepared to keep it from getting to that point.
“We have a variety of viewing decks for everyone to watch and take in all the great golf action, and they’re all covered,” said Christina Fecher, Meijer spokeswoman. “We also have so many beverage tents and concession stands so there’s just so many opportunities for people to stay hydrated and get out of the heat.”
Some other tips from the tournament physician include drinking water as often as you can, making sure you wear light colored clothes, wearing a hat and trying to stay out of the sun.
