Del Monte recalls vegetable trays in Michigan, 5 other states

One of America's most recognizable food brands has recalled a veggie tray that if eaten could make your family sick.

Del Monte is recalling three sizes of vegetable trays due to a parasite outbreak, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The FDA began investigating the outbreak on Friday after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control reported 78 laboratory confirmed cases of the parasite cyclospora cayetanensis had been reported in Michigan, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. The two cases from Michigan reportedly involved trays purchased in Wisconsin, the FDA said.

The recall was issued Saturday.

The 6-ounce, 12-ounce and 28-ounce vegetable trays also were distributed in Illinois and Indiana. Recalls have been issued in those states as well.

According to the FDA's website, the recalled products were distributed to Kwik Trip, Kwik Star, Demond's, Sentry, Potash, Meehan's, Country Market, Food Max Supermarket and Peapod stores. They have a best-if-eaten-by date of June 17 or earlier.

The FDA has not yet identified which of the ingredients is the source of the outbreak, the website said. Each vegetable, as well as distribution and supplier information, is being investigated.

The microscopic cyclospora parasite, when ingested, can cause cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness, according to the FDA. Most people infected with the parasite develop diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, fatigue and other flu-like symptoms. If not treated, the FDA said the illness could last from a few days to a month or longer.

People who have bought Del Monte 6-ounce, 12-ounce or 28-ounce vegetable trays should throw away the product immediately, the FDA said. For any inquiries, consumers may call Del Monte's customer service at 1-800-659-6500 or email Del Monte at Contact-US-Executive-Office@freshdelmonte.com
