The GRFD Fire Youth Academy is in full swing, giving local students a chance to experience what it's like being apart of a fire rescue crew.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - For one week this summer, a select few high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors get a chance to experience what it's like being a firefighter.

The Grand Rapids Fire Department's Fire Youth Academy is in full swing, having started Monday, June 18 and running until the 22nd at the Fire Training Center on Monroe Avenue.

For one-week, students partake in classroom coursework and hands-on activities that cover:

  • Search and rescue
  • Fire engine and aerial truck operations
  • Special rescue operations
  • Protective equipment
  • Fire prevention
  • Fire investigation
  • Emergency medical services

The students accepted into the fire academy are required to have a GPA of 2.0 or higher and be in good standing at their respective schools. They must also have clean records -- no felony convictions.
