GRPD standoff ends after 6 hours, gunman at large

Neighbors were given the choice to stay in their homes in a safe place, or voluntarily evacuate.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Grand Rapids Police are investigating after a six-hour standoff on the city's northwest side.

A 27-year-old man was, at one point, inside a home on Dale Street, armed with one victim. He is now considered at large.

A woman visiting the home called 911 around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, when she saw the man threaten a 33-year-old woman with a gun. The caller was able to get out of the home with three children.

Officers were able to get one more child out of the home upon arrival. At that time, the gunman and the victim were the only two inside the house. Police say both reside at the home and are believed to be in a domestic relationship and all four children belong to the woman inside.

After six hours, police entered the home and found the woman hiding. She had some injuries, but police aren't sure how old they are. The armed man was no longer inside the home. His location is not known at this time.

Both the man and woman are wanted on warrants. The man is a parole violator. The woman has five miscellaneous warrants -- she will be taken into custody after medical clearance.

Neighbors were given the choice to stay in their homes in a safe place, or voluntarily evacuate.

Air horns were blowing all night to either wake up the people inside, or remind them police are outside and not leaving until the situation ended peacefully.

Dale is closed between Monroe and Center. Police will remain on scene investigating for a large portion of the morning, but the road should reopen by 8 a.m.
