Summer meals are free of charge for children in Grand Rapids

Text the word 'FOOD' to 877-877 for nearest locations.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Did you know Grand Rapids Public Schools provide about 3,000 meals a day over the summer for kids ages 18 and under?

Kids at Martin Luther King Jr. Park are part of a non-profit summer day camp called, Dreams Take Work. The program director said if it wasn't for this program, the camp would not be able to operate.

"Grand Rapids Public Schools Food Service plays a huge a part of this program," Program Director Duke Turley Jr. said. "It's like a 50/50 thing if you ask me—if they don't provide the meals, we are not able to provide this camp. So they play a huge part in what we do here."

This marks the 15th year this program has been operating. It's available Monday through Friday throughout the summer.

"The hardest part is getting the word out to the families, that this is open to everybody," said GRPS Supervisor for Nutrition Services Jennifer Laninga. "There is no enrollment, there is no sign-up, you simply show up with your children, and they can receive a nutritious meal."

To find a location nearest you, the USDA's website has an interactive map. You can just put in your zip code. You can also text the word "FOOD" to 877-877.
