Kayak sculptures to be unveiled downtown Muskegon

They will be on display through Labor Day weekend.

MUSKEGON, Mich. - A group of sculptures incorporating actual kayaks will be officially unveiled at 4 p.m. in downtown Muskegon Thursday, July 5 at the Olthoff Stage.

The event is being hosted by the Lakeshore Art Festival in conjunction with the Muskegon Museum of Art.

This week the nine sculptures began appearing in various locations in the city's downtown. They will be on display through Labor Day weekend.

The works are located along W. Western Avenue and Clay Streets, between 7th Street and Jefferson Street.

Lakeshore Art Festival Director Carla Flanders says "residents and summer visitors will be impressed by the creativity" of the nine artists.

The works serve as a public reminder that the Lakeshore Art Festival will take place on July 6 and 7.

A "kayak crawl" will be held to tour the sculptures from 4:30 until 5:00 p.m. July 5.

Muskegon based kayak maker Sun Dolphin donated kayaks for the sculptures and is the signature sponsor of the 2018 project.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
