Allegan County Sheriff's K9, Luca, gets new body armor

Allegan County Sheriff's Office K9 Luca received a bullet and stab protective vest after a generous nonprofit's donation.

ALLEGAN, Mich. - A K9 officer with the Allegan County Sheriff's Office got their very own body armor.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. donated money for a bullet and stab protective vest. According to the sheriff's office, Luca the K9 officer's new vest was sponsored by Sharon Peters from Grosse Pointe Shores and embroidered with the sentiment "In memory of Det. Lt. Richard J. Scott."

Luca is partnered with Deputy Ryan Rewa and the two have been working together for almost one year. Luca is trained in narcotics detection, tracking and handler protection/suspect apprehension.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. is a Massachusetts nonprofit established in 2009. They have provided more than 3,000 protective vests to K9s all over the country.

The program is open to dogs actively employed in the U.S. with law enforcement or related agencies who are certified and at least 20 months of age. New K9 graduates, as well as K9s with expired vests, are eligible to participate.
