Local pizza shop has no delivery drivers on staff, goes to Uber Eats only

"The downside for me is Uber will take 22 to 30 percent of the ticket, that comes out of my pocket and that is what's off-setting my labor costs," says Raymond.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — If you call Grand Rapids Pizza and Delivery you can get any kind of toppings your heart desires.

But if you call to place an order for delivery that's a different story.

"If you go to our website or your smartphone there is an Uber Eats app," says Owner Michael Raymond.

That's right, this pizza shop doesn't have any delivery drivers on staff anymore it's all handled with a couple taps on your smartphone.

"Some people, especially millennials are gravitating towards apps for the smartphone," says Raymond.

The restaurant which is located on State Street still offers takeout but made the change to go all Uber Eats on deliveries last month, in part due to a lack of good workers and the problem of having drivers fight over who gets the big order.

"Now we've streamlined it with Uber Eats, there isn't any employees fighting for it anymore, now a customer orders and an Uber driver comes and delivers the order," says Raymond.

Raymond has already seen advantages like a decrease in labor costs and a larger delivery area.

"It allows us to acquire more customers from areas we normally wouldn't deliver to, our store doesn't deliver out to the airport but our pizzas have gone out there," says Raymond.

But he admits there are some disadvantages.

"The downside for me is Uber will take 22 to 30 percent of the ticket, that comes out of my pocket and that is what's off-setting my labor costs," says Raymond.
