Report: Police identify man accused of shooting an MSP trooper

The man had three warrants out for his arrest at the time of the shooting.

LAKE TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Michigan State Police say that Douglas Sawyer, 32, of Fenton shot a trooper on Friday near Lake City, according to 9&10 News.

Police say that Sawyer shot and killed himself after exchanging gunfire with law enforcement.

On Friday around 1:30 p.m., the male trooper stopped a car with three people in it, and police say Sawyer fired at the trooper.

The trooper returned fire but was hit several times. He were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to MSP. He was later released and is expected to recover. Police are not identifying the trooper at this time.

Police did not say if any of the shots fired by police hit Sawyer.

MSP says that Sawyer had three warrants for his arrest at the time of the shooting. 9&10 News reports that they were:

  • Failure to comply with parole after a prison sentence for home invasion
  • Felony warrant for 4th degree criminal sexual assault out of the Michigan State Police Paw Paw post
  • Civil warrant for child neglect

The two other people in the car were taken into custody.
