Man dies at hospital after Ottawa County water rescue

Deputies say he was last seen about 20 feet out from the beach at Winds Nest Park.

PORT SHELDON TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Deputies, fire and rescue crews were called to a water rescue in Port Sheldon Township on Wednesday, Aug. 15.

According to Eric Westveer with Ottawa County, crews were called because a man was last seen in the water for about three minutes swimming in Lake Michigan. Deputies say he was last seen about 20 feet out from the beach at Winds Nest Park, at which time he was seen going under water.

The man was located a short time after authorities arrived on scene and was taken to the hospital. He died shortly after arriving.

He has been identified as 20-year-old Brandon Schmidt from Allendale.

The incident remains under investigation.
