"Everything is now taking place in Rosa Parks Circle, we're opening all of it to the public rather than having some ticketed events in random locations," says Froman.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — GVSU President Thomas Haas is thrilled that his students get to be a part of ArtPrize 10.

"Each year it evolves and gets even better...this is great for the color guard, the clarinetists, the drum line, the students love being a part of something so special," says Haas.

Wednesday night's opening ceremony at Rosa Parks Circle set the tone for the event, which is expected to bring thousands to Grand Rapids over the next couple weeks. More than 1,200 entries can be found at 168 different venues.

Lauren Froman is an ArtPrize coordinator, who says one of the biggest changes this year the location change.

"Everything is now taking place in Rosa Parks Circle, we're opening all of it to the public rather than having some ticketed events in random locations," Froman said.

Hundreds attended the opening ceremony including artist Brandon Carlson. This is the second year that Carlson will compete in the event.

"I don't know of any other event that attracts so many people from other states and countries, it's so great for the area and so great for Grand Rapids," Carlson said.
