National Weather Service forecasters are expecting the first widespread frost to appear late Friday night into early Saturday morning in parts of the Upper Peninsula and the northern Lower Peninsula, including areas around Cadillac, Roscommon, West Branch and Gaylord. A blast of cold air will push temperatures into the mid-30s.

"Hopefully, this cold weather will make for good fall colors," said Tim Locker, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Gaylord.

Fall starts at 9:54 p.m. Saturday.

Patches of frost have already appeared in parts of the western Upper Peninsula, said Don Rolfson, a meteorologist for the weather service in Marquette. The first widespread frost expected this weekend is a little late compared with past years, he said.

"This is probably pretty typical, maybe a little bit on the late side," he said. "(We) usually see it the first half of September."

No frost is in the forecast for metro Detroit — yet.

Meteorologist Alex Manion, who works in the weather service's White Lake office, said the average first day for widespread frost in Detroit is Oct. 4.
