Identity revealed of man who made offer on Muskegon's Hackley Administration Building

John Essex says he learned Muskegon Public Schools couldn't afford the much needed - and expensive - repairs on the building, so he put together a purchase offer.

The Muskegon businessman offering to buy the Historic Hackley Administration Building is the C.E.O. of the Port City Group.

John Essex says he learned Muskegon Public Schools couldn't afford the much needed - and expensive - repairs on the building, so he put together a purchase offer.

The offer includes spending nearly one-million dollars on renovations in the first 18-months if the district elects to sell him the Muskegon landmark.

The most pressing issue is the building's roof, but repairs are also needed on all floors and to the building's stone exterior.

Any sale of the Hackley building would need to be approved by the district's school board. Essex says if he becomes the building's new owner, he believes the best use going forward would likely still be as an office space.
