Lake County man accused of brutalizing wife appears in court

Roger Hubbard faces at least 25 years in prison.

BALDWIN, Mich. – A Lake County man accused of beating his wife causing her to suffer multiple strokes appeared in court Tuesday afternoon.

Sharlene Hubbard testified at a preliminary hearing that her husband, Roger Hubbard, punched her in the side of the head, kicked her and left her at their home for hours in mid-September.

Roger Hubbard is charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm. The offense carries a 10-year prison sentence, but he faces at least 25 years due to prior convictions.

Hubbard spent years in prison for crimes including unarmed robbery and home invasion.

At the stand, Sharlene Hubbard said she initially told doctors and authorities that her injuries were accidental because her husband told her to lie.

“He told me to let the hospital know that we were at our house and we had a bed frame and a shelf fell,” Hubbard said. “And the hospital said that it did not add up with the injuries that I had from the CT scan.”

Sharlene Hubbard said she was able to tell the truth to a detective days later when the she wasn’t sedated. She was discharged Tuesday from Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital

The hearing adjourned after Sharlene’s testimony to allow the defense to review medical records. Lake County Prosecutor Craig Cooper said there is no set date for continuation of the hearing.
