Police arrest 18-year-old on drunken driving charge while infant in back seat

MILFORD, Mich. - Arrested for underage drunken driving, a White Lake man could also be facing a child endangerment charge.

Milford Police stopped the man’s vehicle at about 2:45 a.m., Dec. 2, near E. Commerce Road and Burns. The officer noted the driver had slammed on the brakes to stop at a flashing red light, drove over the curb and then crossed the center line several times before being pulled over.

The driver, 18, was accompanied by his girlfriend, 25, also of White Lake, and their infant son, less than 2 months old. The man told the officer they had been visiting friends and that he had consumed a few shots of alcohol.

Along with underage drinking, the man did not have a valid drivers license. Asked why he was driving, the man told the officer that his girlfriend didn’t feel good and was pregnant. It turned out the man had never obtained a driver license and was arrested while driving by White Lake Police about 10 days earlier.

The officer also noted the man had two prior alcohol-related convictions along with a felony conviction for larceny in a building.

The girlfriend told the officer she was sober but upon talking with her, he said he found she had also been drinking and had a blood-alcohol level above the limit for driving.

The officer allowed the woman to contact her father, who came to the scene and parked her car before driving her home with the baby.

The officer contacted Child Protective Services to report a child endangerment incident. A warrant was being sought charging the man with child endangerment, underage alcohol consumption and never obtaining a drivers license.
