Godfrey-Lee Schools considering change to mascot

A final decision on the school mascot is not expected til the end of January.

WYOMING, Mich. - There is controversy in Wyoming related to a school mascot. Godfrey Lee High School is considering a change to their "Lee Rebels" mascot.

On Tuesday, Dec. 11, Godfrey Lee Schools held a forum to discuss a possible change and the reasons behind it.

Members of the school board say the issue is emotional and complex. They understand that some will say a change is a sign of being too politically correct, but others disagree.

"Over the years we've heard concerns multiple times from different people, a lot really being tied to the Confederate symbolism," explained Eric Mockerman, school board President. "The district in times past used a lot of that symbolism and a lot of the concerns are tied to that and the feelings of racism that come along with that history."

Another forum is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 17. A final decision on the school mascot is not expected until after that.
