Reeths-Puffer introduces Bird as new football coach

Bird spent the last 13 years leading the Grand ledge football team. During that time the Comets went 88-43 with six league titles and nine playoff appearances

MUSKEGON, Mich. - Reeths-Puffer introduced the schools new football coach Friday afternoon. Matt Bird will take over a team that has had back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 2000.

Bird spent the last 13 years leading the Grand ledge football team. During that time the Comets went 88-43 with six league titles and nine playoff appearances, including a state semifinal appearance in 2015. Bird was also the offensive coordinator of Grand Ledge's 2000 Division 1 state championship team.

Bird expects to start his new role as Reeths-Puffer's football coach in January. He will also have an athletic administration role at the school. "It’s a tough thing," Bird said. "Grand Ledge is a place that you don’t look for another job. This one was an opportunity that kind of came about unexpectedly. The opportunity to grow professionally, not only as a coach, but then with an administrative role as well and then to get the opportunity to go over to Muskegon where it’s growing from a town standpoint (is good).
