Grand Rapids firefighter saves cat in overnight house fire

Crews found the cat in the stairwell leading to the basement.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - A woman and her cat are safe after a fire broke out at a home on Grand Rapids' east side overnight.

The fire started in the middle of the night on Tuesday, Dec. 18, on the corner of Milton Street and Youell Avenue.

When firefighters arrived, flames were showing in the front living room, according to the Grand Rapids Fire Department Battalion Chief Bruce Veldcamp.

The homeowner smelled smoke, but no alarms went off. She was able to get out and call 911.

She told firefighters her cat was still inside. Crews found the cat in the stairwell leading to the basement. It was brought outside and revived.

No one else was hurt.

The home has significant damage to the front. There is also smoke damage throughout.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
