WYOMING, Mich. — Two homes and a building were evacuated in Wyoming Friday morning after a report of a suspicious device on the sidewalk that turned out to be a box of fireworks.

Around 9:30 a.m., Wyoming Police were called to an unattended device left near the 1200 block of 56th St. SW. Officers say the device seemed like commercial grade fireworks. There were also visible wires.

The Michigan State Police Bomb Squad evaluated the device and determined it was legal fireworks. They are commercially available but powerful.

The device was not considered destructive, but police believe it could be dangerous if handled improperly.

Wyoming Police evacuated nearby homes and put a shelter in place for others during the investigation. Part of 56th Street SW and Gezon Parkway SW were closed as well. All roads were reopened.

Wyoming Police do not believe anyone intended any harm, but do not know who left the device, or why.

Anyone with information should call Wyoming Police (616) 530-7300 or Silent Observer at 616-774-2345.
