GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Grand Rapids Public Schools Board of Education is taking steps to develop a proposal to conduct a national search for its next superintendent.
The board had narrowed the search down to two candidates -- Devon Horton and Adrian Talley -- but chose not to pursue either candidate.
The board voted 6-3 to go in a new direction at a Saturday, April 13 board meeting.
The district expressed a desire to move forward with the development of a request for proposals from executive search firms to look for the next superintendent.
Board president Kristian Grant will be working with the district's human resources and legal counsel to develop a proposal, which is expected to be presented at the Monday, May 6 board meeting.
The board has also voted to establish a process to appoint an interim superintendent. Board members are expected to vote on an internal posting for the interim position on May 6, with a posting anticipated on May 7.
The board will meet on May 13 to review applicants and consider next steps.
Current superintendent Teresa Weatherall-Neal is retiring at the end of June.
