GRAND HAVEN, Mich — Update (5:14 p.m.) — The bridge is now open to traffic in both directions.
Original story:
U.S. 31 traffic is stopped both northbound and southbound in Grand Haven, as of about 4:45 p.m. Thursday.
Some kind of drawbridge malfunction has apparently halted traffic. Police are beginning to divert motorists to alternate routes.
We’ll have more information when it becomes available. In the meantime, avoid U.S. 31 north and south of Grand Haven.
A message from the City of Grand Haven at 4:59 p.m.: “GHDPS advises you to avoid U.S. 31 due to traffic congestion caused by the drawbridge malfunction. Traffic is backing up. Drivers are to avoid U.S. 31. Northbound traffic take Lake Michigan Drive to M-231. Southbound traffic detour to M-104.”
Police say maintenance workers are en route to the bridge, but there is no estimated time of repair at this point.
