Ottawa County Emergency Management to offer CERT basic training

CERT training is comprised of eight units and an exam/disaster simulation.

WEST OLIVE, Mich. - The Ottawa County Community Emergency Response Team, also known as CERT, is offering their 24-hour CERT basic training course over a span of three Saturday's in June.

Attendance at all three sessions, which are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 8, 15 and 22, is required to receive your CERT certificate. 

The training will be held at the Ottawa County Fillmore Street Complex, 12220 Fillmore Street in West Olive, Michigan.

Training sessions will address the following areas:

  • Disaster Preparedness
  • Fire Safety
  • Disaster Medical Operations
  • Light Search and Rescue
  • CERT Organization
  • Disaster Psychology
  • Terrorism and CERT
  • Disaster Simulation

According to a press release, CERT is about readiness, people helping people, rescuer safety and doing the greatest good for the greatest number. They take a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations where citizens will be initially on their own, and their actions can make a difference.

CERT is one of the Citizen Corps programs under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Space for training is limited and will be on a first come, first served basis. Participants are not required to become Ottawa County CERT members, but information will be available for those interested.
