Authorities ID man in wheelchair killed in crash

The fatal crash happened on Sunday.

ALLENDALE TOWNSHIP, Mich. - The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office has identified the 81-year-old wheelchair-bound man killed in a crash over the weekend.

According to a release, Allendale resident Donald Reister was leaving his driveway to cross 68th Avenue on his motorized wheelchair when he pulled into the path of a vehicle driven by 25-year-old Essence Jackson, of Grand Rapids.

"She [said she] saw the individual driving down his driveway and assumed he was going to stop at the end of the driveway, and as she got closer he continued out into her path," said Sgt. Mike VanDenBosch, head of the traffic services unit in the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office. "At that point, she couldn't stop in time."

Deputies found Jackson was not using her phone at the time of the crash. Witnesses indicated Reister did not look to the left before crossing out of his driveway.

Reister was pronounced dead at the scene. Jackson was not injured n the crash.

The crash remains under investigation, but authorities do not believe alcohol, drugs or speed were factors in the crash.
