GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - A bicyclist is dead after colliding with a semi-truck in Grand Rapids early Thursday morning.
According to Grand Rapids Police, it happened around 5:40 a.m. at the intersection of Turner Avenue NW and 6th Street NW on Grand Rapids' west side.
Police say the semi was headed south on Turner when the driver stopped at the intersection before beginning to turn eastbound onto 6th Street. Nineteen-year-old Devin Lamont was heading west on 6th, but did not stop at the intersection and collided with the semi.
The family of the Grand Rapids man says he was biking home after working third-shift at his new job. This was his fourth day working at a factory on the city's northwest side. He died on the scene from his injuries.
"He always tried to do his best, and even on his down times -- he was still trying to do better in life," said Lamont's cousin, Grace Barnes. "He had so much life left to live."
His mother, Loretta Barnes, said he was so proud of his new job and had plans to get his license in the coming weeks.
Investigators do not believe speed or alcohol played a role in the crash.
The intersection was closed for several hours as authorities investigated the scene. Anyone with further information is asked to call Officer Ewald 616-456-4282.
The family has also started a GoFundMe to raise money for Lamont's funeral costs.
