Driver in critical condition after car split in half in Grand Rapids crash

It happened on Lafayette Avenue SE between Fulton and Washington streets on Grand Rapids' southeast side.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The driver in a crash that ended with a vehicle split in half is in critical condition, authorities say.

The crash happened around 4:40 a.m. Tuesday on Lafayette Avenue SE between Fulton and Washington streets. The driver was speeding down Lafayette and crashed into a tree on the east side of the road, according to Grand Rapids Police spokesperson Raul Alvarez. 

The driver, a 20-year-old man, was taken to St. Mary's Hospital in critical condition. Alvarez said it was not immediate known if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.

Authorities hauled away pieces of the vehicle and cleared the roadway. The tree was left severely damaged as well.

The crash is still under investigation.
