OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. — At least two people are hurt after a crash involving multiple vehicles on Lake Michigan Drive near Grand Valley State University.
It happened around 6:45 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of Lake Michigan Drive near Linden Drive NW, on the bridge over the Grand River.
According to a press release from the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office, a 2006 Buick Ranier was on Lake Michigan Drive over the bridge when he lost control due to ice on the bridge. The driver hit the guardrail and came to a stop in the eastbound lanes of Lake Michigan Drive. The Ranier was then struck by a 2009 Chevy Impala.
According to the sheriff's office, the driver of the Ranier told police that he could see traffic coming, and could tell that the traffic was not going to be able to stop in time. He was able to exit his vehicle and jumped off the bridge to the ground below, hurting his leg. He was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the Impala suffered facial injuries, and was treated at the scene, but declined to be taken to the hospital, the press release said.
The eastbound lanes of Lake Michigan Drive were closed for cleanup for a little over an hour. They have since reopened.
