GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Monday, we honor the legacy and remember the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Most traditional, in-person events in West Michigan have postponed or canceled due to the ongoing pandemic. However, there are some virtual events.
- Calvin University's January Series will welcome speaker, Jemar Tisby, who will speak on the "Color of Compromise." The event begins at 12:30 p.m. and you can watch it online.
- Grand Valley State University is hosting a presentation called "The Legacy of MLK," which begins at 6:30 p.m. You can register for that online event here.
- Celebration Cinemas will play two films. "One Night in Miami" is showing at all Celebration Cinema theaters and is focused on a historic hotel room meeting between Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, Sam Cooke and Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Brown.
- Exclusive showing at Studio Park is "MLK FBI," a documentary of the intelligence community's efforts to discredit and destroy a leader of the Civil Rights Movement.
In Muskegon, there are several virtual celebration planned.
- We Are LIT!, a Grand Rapids-based multicultural bookshop, is partnering with Muskegon Heights Public Schools and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History to put on film screenings, choir performances, and a keynote speaking event. Registration can be found on the We Are LIT! Facebook page.
