Hazardous materials incident on Ann Street cleared, no injuries reported

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — There was a hazardous materials incident at 521 Ann Street NW in Grand Rapids, the Fire Department says. The area is now clear and no injuries were reported.

Officials said the incident was at Haviland Enterprises, a chemical manufacturing company, around 6:54 p.m. Firefighters are at still the scene.

The situation is now stabilized. There was a minor release of an unknown gas that has since dissipated outside of the building. The reaction was contained inside the building, the Fire Department reported.

No evacuation orders will be given to nearby locations. Two residences to the north of the structure were asked to shelter in place.

“We are investigating the incident and will provide further information as it is known,” said Meg Post, president of Haviland Enterprises, Inc. “Our top priority is the safety and well-being of our employees and the Grand Rapids community.”
