LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) announced historically low recidivism rates following an annual review this week.

Every year, MDOC reviews outcomes of people released from prison three years prior. The review is to determine recidivism rates, or the percentage of people who reoffend after being criminally convicted.

The latest review looked at people who were released from Michigan prisons in 2020.

The review showed that during the three-year period, over 6,100 people successfully completed their incarceration and community supervision without reoffending.

MDOC said that the recidivism rate for people released from incarceration in 2020 was 22.7%, the second lowest rate in state history. The recidivism rate in 2019 was the state's lowest ever at 22.1%.

Here are the recidivism rates from the last four reviews conducted by MDOC:

  • 2020: 22.7%
  • 2019: 22.1%
  • 2018: 23.6%
  • 2017: 26.7%

“Those who work for the MDOC are called upon to do something remarkable, which is to help individuals change their behavior and direction in life. This is not easy work, but every single MDOC employee plays a role in producing these outcomes. I’m pleased to see that our work is making communities safer and helping those we work with find success,” said Department of Corrections Director Heidi Washington.

MDOC said that the are committed to using "evidence-based correctional practices" and will continue to invest in staff, high-quality programs and community-based supports.
