Michigan school district mourns the death of students following birthday party crash

In a statement to community members, Flat Rock Community Schools said it will have support staff on hand for students Monday following the tragic incident.

FLAT ROCK, Mich. — A fatal collision at Swan Boat Club on Saturday left two children dead and multiple others hospitalized after a drunk driver crashed into the building, which was hosting a child's birthday party.

Community members were quick to rally in support of all those involved in the tragic incident. By Sunday, a makeshift memorial was set up where the car crashed into the building.

Flat Rock Community Schools issued a statement Sunday, stating that the two siblings who lost their lives were students in the district. The youngest, a 4-year-old boy named Zayn, attended the Early Childhood Center and the 8-year-old girl, Lana, was a student at Bobcean Elementary. In addition, the siblings' older brother, also a student in the Flat Rock Community, and their mother remain in the hospital, according to the statement.

Flat Rock Community Schools Superintendent Andrew Brodie said the devastating news has caused heartache within the community, and the school district will provide additional support.

"As we navigate through this challenging time, let us lean on each other for strength and comfort, and let us show kindness and understanding to all who are affected by this heartbreaking loss," stated Brodie.

Brodie states that Flat Rock schools intend to have counselors and social workers available for students and their families on Monday.

"We are committed to creating a safe and nurturing environment where everyone feels supported, heard, and valued," he said. "Please keep the families of those affected in your thoughts as we come together as a school community to support one another and to honor the memory of those we have lost."
