Zeeland's Critter Barn makes history with accessibility honor

Leaders from the popular attraction believe they're the first farm in the world to achieve Universal Design Silver Certification. They told us what that means.

ZEELAND, Mich. — For years, Critter Barn has been one of the most popular places in West Michigan for families to take their kids, and now the attraction is proving its commitment to inclusivity.

The farm broke ground on its new location near the corner of 80th Avenue and Felch Street back in 2019, and it was built with accessibility in mind.

"Everywhere you go, you're able to walk through our farms on pavement. And so if you have a wheelchair or any type of accessibility, you can get through our farms. And our bathrooms as well are at ADA compliant, and even above. When you walk around our farm, it is open to everyone because we want everyone to feel welcome at our farm," said executive director Tony McCaul.

This week, the farm held a celebration to recognize its newly-acquired Universal Design Silver Certification. They believe they're the first farm in the world to receive that certification.

"I think it's so important that we know the entire family is welcome. Families that might not be able to get out now can get out and see animals. Also I think sometimes you might not even think about grandparents. You know, they start to get slower and now they can enjoy the farm as well. So it's a total family experience," McCaul said.

Critter Barn is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. They'll be hosting the "Running of the Lambs" on May 4.
