GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — It's officially orange cone season in Michigan.
After weeks of construction, road closures and increased drivetime for commuters who use US-131 northbound between 28th Street and Ann Street, the highway is back open.
It's just in time for the pre-planned southbound closure that was slated to start this weekend.
Crews were expected to close two lanes of southbound US-131 at Ann Street at 7 a.m. on Sunday, April 28. The closure extends to Burton Street.
However, on Sunday morning a rain delay was announced. The closure will now begin at 7 a.m. on Monday, April 29.
Southbound US-131 will be completely closed from Burton Street to M-11 (28th Street) for the four-week construction project.
The southbound US-131 ramp to M-11 (28th Street) will be completely closed as well.
Work is expected to last on the southbound lanes for four weeks, with the work scheduled to wrap up on May 24.
During this work, one lane of southbound US-131 will remain open from Ann Street to Burton Street.
Through traffic should use westbound I-196 and eastbound M-11 as detours.
Local traffic can use westbound Burton Street, Southbound Clyde Park Avenue and eastbound M-11 (28th Street) as detour options.
This project is part of the Michigan Department of Transportation's $6.2 million improvement project for northbound and southbound US-131 bridges over Plaster Creek.
MDOT said this project will increase safety, improve ride quality and extend the service life of US-131 and bridges over Plaster Creek.
